Deceased Name: Zien , Burton J. Zien, Burton J. On December 22, 2002, at 90 years of age,
Burt died peacefully in a Boston, Massachusetts, hospice, with his wife
Betty, son Jim, and nephew Chip Zien at his side. Burt was born in Milwaukee,
and graduated from the University of Wisconsin. He held key labor relations
positions with the Tennessee Valley Authority and the U.S. Department of
Labor in the 1930s and 1940s; supervised U.S. radar stations in the South
Pacific during WW II; and with his three brothers operated Zien Mechanical
Contractors, a participant in the construction of many significant Wisconsin
buildings. A lifelong social, political, community, and peace activist, as
well as an accomplished sculptor in his retirement, Burt's lust for life will
be missed by a large family including Betty, Jim and Karen Anne Zien;
granddaughters Rebecca Collet and her husband Denis; and Jennifer Bailey and
her husband Stewart; great-granddaughter Jacqueline (Rebecca) and
great-grandson Jack (Jennifer); sisters Janet Wintroub and Betty Ann Croen;
brothers Robert, Allen, and Edward Zien; numerous sisters- and
brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends. Burt donated his body to the
Harvard University School of Medicine in support of its programs of research
and education. A celebration of his life will occur in Milwaukee in the
